He Will Act
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37:5)
I am one of two men with the opportunity to carry on my family name, so I wanted a son very badly. When I married Lindsay, I had no clue about fertility problems. I figured you had kids when you wanted kids. So when we had trouble getting pregnant, it was a bit confusing.
We went to fertility doctors. We took fertility vitamins that made me nearly throw up in the middle of a men's Bible study. I had a surgery.
We grew weary. After lots of time and money spent, we wondered if kids were in God's path for us. I wondered if I'd have that son to bear my last name.
My Uncle Don was in town on business one night, so he came by the house. After Lindsay had gone to bed, we sat at my hand-me-down kitchen table over a glass of wine. I explained our struggles. Always engaged in the moment, Uncle Don looked at me and said, "Can I pray for you?"
We bowed our heads and Uncle Don pleaded for God to provide us with children. As he prayed, I could feel something powerful was in the works. From that moment, I began to trust the Lord a little more and submit my desires to him.
Liam was born in April of 2011 and Lila was born in November of 2013. Not only do I have that son I always wanted, I have a daughter who owns the title to my heart.
There are many people who struggle much more with fertility than we did. My point is not to highlight our struggle as some epic battle. My point is to highlight God's sovereignty. He answered that earnest prayer by Uncle Don. He worked through the hands of surgeons and doctors. He acted.
No matter what you're going through, you have a game plan. Commit your way to the Lord and trust him. I know you can't see around the next corner and you wish you knew how this ends up, but that's not how life goes. God will act. It may not be in the way you expected - in fact, his action will probably be contrary to what you think he should do and when he should do it. But he is a good Father, and he will act on your behalf with legions of angels and a voice so powerful it made the world.
