a voice crying out in the postmodern wilderness

You Are Of More Value Than Many Sparrows

You Are Of More Value Than Many Sparrows

I love it when people talk about "the universe" not as a cosmic collection of planets and stars, but as some mystical god that interacts with us. Sorry, my confused friends, but the universe doesn't care one iota about you or me.

But the one who made it does.

Since we cannot see God, it is easy to fall into bad theology about who God is. We start to think because he can't show up to our birthday parties that he isn't there or that he's too busy to care. He's got lots of stuff to deal with, like caring for the universe.

When we think like this, we completely ignore his presence. We ignore the people around us who bring his love. We forget the food on our tables which nourishes us. We overlook his instruction in wisdom through the hard circumstances in our lives. And, perhaps most dangerously, we forget the favor shown toward us on the cross.

Redemption.

Hope.

Love.

Acceptance.

The costly grace of Jesus is not a shotgun approach - that is, one big wiping of our slates clean. No, the grace of Jesus is very specific. It is for each person different, as our sins and sufferings are each different. We must learn to accept the gift of grace, not as a party favor where everyone gets the same thing, but as a handmade gift tailored for each of us. You see, God's grace fits perfectly around our sins. It enters the cracks in our character. It seals up the holes in our souls where we long for something we cannot seem to find.

Our Lord cares about the universe and the creatures within, like sparrows. But you, my friend, are most special to him. Here is what Jesus says about you:

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you of more value than many sparrows. (Luke 12:6-7)

What this means is that no matter what you're going through, the Lord is there in your midst at work. It means that no matter what you hope for, your heart will be fulfilled if it is placed in the hands of Christ.

Just as God never neglects us, may we never neglect to realize his gracious presence with us. If we are in Christ, the Holy Spirit resides within us. God is not out there. He's in here. So the same force that made this big ole universe and the same force that redeemed mankind by dying for it - yeah, that God is with you this very moment as you read these words.

Because you are of more value than many sparrows.
